【GD TODAY】Guangdong, American hospitals announce five-year cancer prevention and treatment collaboration

Recently, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), a teaching hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School, jointly hosted the "Innovations in Cancer Care Symposium", focusing on cutting-edge areas such as women's oncology, clinical research innovations in oncology, and precision oncology.

The event attracted top-tier oncologists from China and the United States, editors-in-chief of international authoritative journals, and leaders in the medical industry. Through interdisciplinary dialogues, they explored innovative pathways for diagnosis and treatment and promoted clinical translation.

At the symposium, FAH-SYSU and DFCI announced a five-year strategic partnership that will involve comprehensive collaboration in areas such as leadership training, talent development, and discipline construction.

Xiao Haipeng, president of FAH-SYSU, noted that the global cancer burden has risen to 20 million new cases annually and is projected to surge to 35 million by 2050. In China alone, there were 4.57 million new cancer cases and 3 million cancer-related deaths in 2020.

"Cancer remains one of the most severe and urgent health challenges facing humanity globally, requiring global medical institutions to work together to address cancer prevention and treatment and drive future changes in cancer therapy," said Xiao.

Xiao added that cancer prevention and treatment rely on the sharing of wisdom across borders. FAH-SYSU will further strengthen its collaboration with DFCI to jointly develop comprehensive strategies for cancer prevention and treatment and drive future changes in cancer therapy.

He cited an example, stating that during the collaboration, DFCI has organized over 280 online training courses for doctors, nurses, and medical students from FAH-SYSU. "In the 2023-2024 period alone, it facilitated three batches of a total of 14 clinicians to participate in programs at DFCI," he said.

Professor Craig Bunnell, the Chief Medical Officer of DFCI, acknowledged the achievements made by both parties in clinical translation and talent exchange. He looks forward to further deepening the collaboration in talent development and discipline construction to bring more hope to cancer patients worldwide.

In February 2021, FAH-SYSU and DFCI established a groundbreaking partnership focusing on advancing specialist care and telemedicine innovations. The collaboration covers multiple disciplines including hematology, breast surgery, gastrointestinal oncology, urology, thoracic surgery, nursing, and pharmacy.

Over the past four years, the two parties have jointly initiated a series of educational programs, clinical exchanges, and academic conferences on cancer prevention and treatment innovations, attracting over 80 faculty members from Harvard Medical School's affiliated teaching institutions and more than 3,000 doctors and students from FAH-SYSU.
